Your first dance is one of the most iconic moments of your wedding day. It’s your chance to share a private, yet public, moment with your new spouse while surrounded by loved ones. But with so many songs to choose from, how do you find “the one” that perfectly represents your love? As a wedding singer, I’ve helped many couples find and perform their first dance songs, and I’ve got a few tips to help you choose the perfect tune.
Think About Your Love Story
Your first dance song should be personal and meaningful to you both. Think about your relationship—was there a song playing when you first met? Do you have a song you both love to sing together? If you have a shared favourite, it could be a great choice for your first dance. Songs that hold sentimental value will make the moment feel even more special.
Test It Out Beforehand
It’s a good idea to practice dancing to your chosen song before the big day. Some songs may sound perfect but could be difficult to dance to because of an awkward tempo or rhythm. You don’t need to choreograph the whole thing unless you want to, but practicing a few spins and steps can help you feel more comfortable and confident. I would always recommend cracking open a bottle of wine before your big day and having a laugh dancing away to songs until you find the one that’s perfect for you.
Some First Dance Song Ideas
If you’re struggling to find the perfect song, here are a few favorites I’ve performed over the years:
“You’re Still the One” by Shania Twain
“Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley
“One and Only” by Adele
“The Best” by Tina Turner
“I Could Get Used to This” (Acoustic Version) by Becky Hill
Choosing your first dance song is a chance to reflect on your love story and create a moment that will be remembered for years to come. Whether you choose a classic tune or a song that’s uniquely yours, make sure it resonates with you as a couple. And don’t forget, it’s your moment—so dance like no one’s watching, even if everyone is!
